5 Projects on Deck for 2022

I can already tell that 2022 is going to be a good year for home improvement projects. Just last week I found out I won a $5000 room makeover grand prize from a Floor & Decor sweepstakes! As a little disclaimer, all but one of the projects planned for 2022 were in the works before I found out I won so it will really help our money go further and I’m glad I get to help my parents improve their house. I’ve already got ideas churning and I can’t wait to share them with you. Here’s our list of the 5 projects we’re planning on tackling in 2022:

1. LVP flooring upstairs

All three bedrooms and the landing on the upper level of my parents house have carpet. I’m fairly sure they’re actually the original carpet from when the house was built in the early 90s. As much as the white carpet brightens up the rooms they’re also covered in stains from kids and dogs. The whole family suffers from dust allergies so we can’t wait to get rid of the carpet. The plan is to replace it all with luxury vinyl plank flooring! This will probably be the biggest project in 2022 and we still haven’t decided if we’ll install it ourselves or hire it out. Here’s the view of the landing looking into my room.

2. Jack and Jill bathroom update

This is the one project that wasn’t on our radar until I won the sweepstakes but it’s one I can’t wait to get started on. My sister and I share a Jack and Jill bathroom and over the years I’ve painted the vanity and the walls a few times. It’s totally fine and works but it could use some love and updating. It still has the original vinyl sheet flooring which has got to go.

The plan for this bathroom is lay tile floors and install a new vanity (with lots of drawers). The tub/shower and toilet are behind another door (where I’m standing in the picture). We’ll continue the floor tile in there as well but the shower tile won’t be changing.

Here’s one bathroom I’m getting inspired by:

3. Painting the staircase

Typical for a 90s house, the stairs have a lot of golden oak going on. They’re starting to stick out like a sore thumb with all the updates we’ve done and are planning on doing (looking at you, LVP floors). The plan for the stairs is to paint the spindles and closed stringer (new staircase term I just learned) white and stain the hand rails and newel posts a nice mid-toned brown to complement the floors.

4. Coat closet makeover

Right off the garage we have a small coat closet. Since this house doesn’t have a mud room, all of our winter boots seem to pile up next to the closet and we trip all over them. It also currently looks like a hot mess and desperately needs to be decluttered. I’d really like to make this space more functional and have a place to store boots out of sight.

5. Shed

For years my dad has talked about adding a shed in the back corner of our backyard and this summer we might finally tackle it. With the extra storage it would clear up a lot of space in the garage and who knows, maybe we could actually fit cars in the garage? This is more of a bonus project so if we don’t get to it then maybe next year.

Be sure to stick with us as we tackle these projects!
